US:
TwoGirls®
are Rebecca Sacco and Alexandra Hughes. Our partnership was established
in 2006 just after we had our brainwave for the Fregie Sack®. We immediately
thought it was worth pursuing as one of those "if we don't do it,
someone else will ideas". With the current state of heightened environmental
awareness and people wanting to live a more sustainable lifestyle, the
Fregie Sack® seemed an easy way for a reusable bag to make a significant
difference to the amount of waste we produce in our every day lives. We
wanted a name that would stick in your memory so we added Fruit +Vegie
and came up with FREGIE.
We initially
talked a lot about it and finally got around to getting some fabric to
make sets for our own use. We loved them immediately and some sets for
Christmas presents soon followed. We started to sense the potential of
our idea with the great feedback we'd been getting and utilised the internet
to spread the word and gauge the response. Orders started coming in and
we started production.
At this
stage we were doing all the sewing ourselves, well, we were doing everything
ourselves and roping in talented family members to help us with areas
of design including website building; but the production, promotion, marketing,
accounting were all us. Our daughters were about 8 months old and spent
lots of time happily playing with fabric and sacks but as they got older
and our families expanded we didn't have the same amount of free time
to get it all done. We were spending all our time sewing and didn't have
any time for promoting the Fregies to a wider audience.
It is extremely
important to us to keep the Fregie Sack® made in Australia. We are
both passionate about buying locally made products and supporting local
industry. After a few connections with local manufacturers, the price
kept going up and we realised to make it viable and keep it Australian
made we'd need to cut out the middle man. We placed ads for people who
sew at home and had the right equipment and away we went. This enables
us to negotiate a fair price directly with the sewer instead of the agent
taking the lion's share. It also gives us more freedom to get made what
we need at that specific time so it has worked out really well.
Our aim was
always to grow our business around our children and be able to enjoy the
special years before they start school. Luckily, as they've grown up with
the Fregie Sack® being part of the every day, they are used to the
way it integrates with their lives. The most difficult thing at the moment
is making phone calls as they always want to chat to whoever is on the
end of the line - it certainly results in some interesting conversations
though!
Currently
the Fregie Sack® is now stocked Australia wide and we are in the process
of getting a distributor set up in New Zealand - we've come a long way
since we first talked about our great idea and it's been a great journey
so far.
